Canvas is the name given to the short videos in loop that Spotify started using a few months ago as a visual presentation of the songs. When the user is listening to a song that has Canvas, instead of showing the cover, the player shows the video loop. According to Spotify, this format greatly increases engagement so users spend more time consuming music that includes this type of content.
You can also create your own Canvas and include it in your releases, we show you how here.
According to some Apple testers that have contacted 9to5Mac, the new operating systems that will be released next week (iOS 14.3 and macOS Big Sur 11.1) include in Apple Music video animations in some selected songs such as Big Sean’s ‘Detroit’ 2 or Pearl Jam’s ‘Gigaton’. These animations are animated album covers that are displayed when playing songs.
At the moment, it is unknown if it is a format that Apple wants to perpetuate or if this will be a feature open to all artists or only artists selected by the platform will be able to use it.
