Me encanta la música pop sobre todo, Taylor Swift y Lorde son algunas de mis mayores influencias musicales pero también me gusta el indie, el country y el folk. Mis grupos favoritos de todos los tiempos son Abba, Colplay, The 1975 y Westlife a las que me introdujeron. Recientemente he descubierto a Lennon Stella quien es increíble y le he estado escuchando mucho últimamente.

I love pop music mainly, Taylor Swift and Lorde are some of my biggest music influences, but I also love indie, country and folk. My all-time favorite bands are Abba, Coldplay, The 1975 and Westlife, who I was brought up on. I’ve recently discovered Lennon Stella who is incredible so have been listening to her a lot lately.

¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en la música? / How long have you been singing?

Llevo cantando desde que tenía 3 años cuando canté Atomic Kitten’s Whole Again en el concurso de talentos de vacaciones en familia en Haven. La música siempre ha sido algo muy importante en mi vida, no puedo recordar un momento en el que no haya cantado, ya sea seriamente o cantando a viva voz canciones de ABBA en el coche.

Aprendí yo sola piano y guitarra a los 13 años así que pude empezar a escribir mis propias canciones y entonces empecé a hacer open mics para construir mi confianza. Tocaba muchas covers y no fue hasta que fui a la universidad a escuchar música que empecé a apuntar a la composición. De repente, estaba rodeada de toda esa gente talentosa con canciones que sonaban a radio así que sentí que tenía ir a tope con mi composición. Entonces empecé a escribir varias canciones al día para practicar la técnica, igual que harías para practicar un instrumento.

I’ve been singing since the age of 3 when I sang Atomic Kitten’s Whole Again at a Haven family holiday talent contest. Music has always been a big thing in my life, I can’t really remember a time where I didn’t sing, either seriously or belting out ABBA on car journeys.

I taught myself Piano and Guitar at the age of 13 so I could start writing my own songs and then began doing open mics to build my confidence. I would play mainly covers and it wasn’t until I went to university to study music that I started to hone in on my songwriting. I was suddenly surrounded by all of these talented people with songs that sounded fresh off the radio and so I felt I had to up my writing game. I then started writing several songs a day to practise the craft, just like you would when learning a new instrument.

¿Cuál dirías que es la mejor canción para que todo el mundo conozca tu trabajo? / Which would you say is the best song to make everyone know your work?

En este punto diría que mi single debut ‘Overthinking’, me costó mucho decidir cuál iba a ser el primer single porque quería que me representara  y me presentara de la forma correcta. Pero tengo muchas canciones en proyecto que tengo muchas ganas de que salgan y ya no puedo esperar. No puedo dar ningún nombre, ¡pero estad atentos!

At this point I would say my debut single ‘Overthinking’, a lot of thought went into choosing the first single because I wanted it to represent and introduce me in the right way. But I have several songs in the pipeline that I’m so excited by and just can’t wait to release. I can’t give away any names but stand by!

[El streaming] es genial para artistas que empiezan

¿Cuáles son tus planes para el futuro? / What are your plans for the future?

Espero lanzar una canción nueva cada seis semanas este año. Espero que pueda escribir canciones que le importen a la gente. Con las que se puedan sentir identificados y  articular lo que sienten. Solo espero que cuanta más gente mejor disfrute mi trabajo igual que yo disfruto las canciones de otros artistas. Me encantaría tocar en un show en el que la gente cante mis canciones, eso sería increíble.

I’m hoping to release a new song every six weeks this year. I hope I can write songs that matter to people. That they can relate to and that articulate what they’re feeling. I just hope as many people as possible enjoy my work in the same way I love songs by other artists. I’d love to play a show where people sing back my songs to me, that would be amazing. 

¿Qué te gusta hacer cuando no estás haciendo música? / What do you like to do when you are not making music?

Me encanta pasar tiempo con mi familia/amigos y hacer cosas como tests en los bares, salir a por comida/bebidas y explorar nuevos sitios. Me encanta hacer fotos así que la fotografía es definitivamente uno de mis hobbies. Veo mucho ‘Coronation Street’ para la edad que tengo y describiría una noche perfecta como pasarme de competitiva en el scrabble con mis mejores amigos.

I love spending time with my family/friends and doing stuff like pub quizzes, going out for food/drinks and exploring new places. I love taking photos so photography is definitely a hobby of mine. I watch way too much coronation street for my age and would describe a perfect night as getting too competitive over scrabble with my best friends. 

¿Qué opinas de la revolución del streaming musical? / What do you think about the streaming revolution in music?

Tiene pros y contras. Es genial para artistas que empiezan como yo para sacar música y ponerse en frente de gente que no había oido hablar de ti antes, pero para los compositores, es definitivamente más difícil ganar dinero ya que lo que se paga a los autores es muy poco. Necesitas millones de streams para ver algo de dinero. Con suerte, veremos un nuevo y más justo sistema de pago pronto, algo más personalizado que te permita confiar en que lo que pagas por suscribirte va a los artistas que escuchas de forma regular.

It has its pros and cons. It’s great for upcoming artists like me to get music out and get in front of people who may not have heard you before, but for songwriters it’s definitely harder to make money as the writing cut is so small. You need millions of streams to see any revenue at all.  Hopefully we’ll see a fairer payment system developing soon, something more personalised where you can trust that your subscription money is going to the artists you like and listen to regularly.
