ENTREVISTA BLACK EYED PEAS | Taboo: “La música latina ha sido siempre parte de Black Eyed Peas”

Con motivo del lanzamiento de ‘Mamacita’ feat. Ozuna  y J. Rey Soul charlamos con Taboo, miembro fundador de Black Eyed Peas, sobre el nuevo proyecto de BEP que está al caer. Un álbum lleno de buena vibra y referencias latinas.

Black Eyed Peas lleva ya más de 25 años lanzando música, durante este tiempo han sido trio, cuarteto y trio de nuevo además de ganar 6 Grammys. Aunque en sus inicios hacían ‘solo’ rap, su desarrollo musical les ha llevado a ser de los grupos con más riqueza musical a nivel mundial. Hoy nos presentan su nuevo trabajo junto a Ozuna: ‘Mamacita’, un pequeño avance del que será su nuevo álbum.

Estáis ultimando los detalles de un nuevo álbum que va a explorar ‘sonidos del mundo’, hay algún género musical o cultura musical que os inspire mucho?

Taboo: Los géneros musicales que me inspiran mucho ahora… ya sabes, el movimiento latino es alucinante, es global, es internacional. A mi, como nativo americano y niño mexicano, me parece muy bonito cuando puedes abrirte paso a culturas con las que yo he crecido, desde salsa hasta merengue pasando por la cumbia, la bachata… el reggaeton… es todo parte de nuestra cultura y estoy contento de que en Black Eyed Peas nos abriéramos paso a ello en los inicios de nuestra carrera con canciones como ‘Latin Girls’, canciones como ‘Tell your Mama Come’, ‘Release’… Hicimos colaboraciones con Sergio Mendes, ‘Mas que Nada’ se llamaba la canción; hicimos colaboraciones con Juanes; ‘La Paga Remix’; hicimos cosas con Daddy Yankee, hicimos cosas con Ricky Martin… Sé que Will.i.am también hizo cosas con Joan Sebastian antes de que muriera.

Así que la música latina ha sido siempre parte de la frecuencia de Black Eyed Peas, así que me alegro de que podamos abrirnos a ello.

¿Vais a combinar también varios idiomas en vuestras letras?

Taboo: Sí, vamos a tener estrofas y estribillos bilingües en este álbum. Hay muchos artistas latinos que colaboran con nosotros. Ya sabes, nosotros hemos hecho esto en el pasado, en otras grabaciones, así que es bueno ser capaces de volver al inicio. Y este álbum va a estar dedicado a la frecuencia que representa la comunidad latina alrededor del mundo. Es un sonido internacional y estamos muy orgullosos de abrirnos a él y aportar a la cultura.

Son muchas las influencias que han bañado a los tres componentes del grupo desde su infancia. Will.i.am, Taboo y  Apl.de.Ap son en si mismos una gran mezcla de culturas e intereses. Black Eyed Peas puede considerarse uno de los grupos pioneros en la experimentación musical, la fusión de estilos y la creación por ende de un sonido único y muy particular que les ha diferenciado siempre.

La energía es un elemento clave que está siempre presente en todas vuestras composiciones, incluso vuestras baladas tienen el poder de hacer que la gente baile, ¿va a seguir este álbum la misma dirección?

Taboo: Sí, este nuevo álbum o proyecto, como nos gusta llamarlo, será para que el mundo la baile, haga ejercicio, conduzca, se inspire, se enamore, sea feliz, se emocione y disfrute de la vida. Se parece un poco a ‘The Energy Never Dies’, que es nuestro álbum ‘The E.N.D’ y a ‘The Beginning’ mezclado con ‘Elephunk’ porque tuvimos muchas influencias latinas en ellos. Estamos muy contentos porque estamos abriéndonos a esa frecuencia international… esa ‘música de sentirse bien’ que la gente está acostumbrada a recibir de Black Eyed Peas.

Vuestra música siempre ha tenido algo que decir sobre como el mundo podría ser un lugar mejor y cómo la humanidad tiene el poder de cambiar las cosas para mejor, ¿qué canción recomendaríais para que la gente escuche durante esta crisis sanitaria global que estamos viviendo?

Taboo: Teniendo en cuenta que estamos pasando por algunos momentos duros ahora mismo, que estamos pasando una cuarentena, diría que ‘música de sentirse bien’. Ya sabes, dese Black Eyed Peas, hasta Bob Marley, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder o Prince. A Tribe Called Quest es música que me ayuda a sentirme bien y en armonía. Simplemente música que eleve tu alma y tu espíritu.

La música no es solo el don de unos y el placer de otros, es además un lenguaje universal que nos une a todos, un bálsamo para el alma que consigue hacernos más fuertes. Y en el caso de Black Eyed Peas es también el mejor elixir de la felicidad. Así que siguiendo los consejos de Taboo… ¡qué empiece la música!

Black Eyed Peas has been releasing music for over 25 years. During this long time they have been a trio and a quartet and a trio once again. Moreover, they have also won 6 Grammys. You are currently working on a new album which will explore ‘sounds of the world’, is there any particular music genre or music culture you feel really inspired by?

Taboo: Music genres I am really inspired by right now, you know, the latino movement is amazing; it’s global; it’s international. Me as a native American Mexican kid, it’s a beautiful thing when you can tap into culture things that I have been brought up on, from salsa to merengue to cumbia to bachata, to I mean… Reggaeton… it’s all part of our culture and I am glad that BEP we tapped into it earlier in our career with songs like ‘Latin Girls’, songs like ‘Tell your Mama Come’, ‘Release’, we did collaborations with Sergio Mendes, ‘Mas que nada’ was the name of the song, we did collabs with Juanes, ‘La Paga Remix’, we did some stuff with Daddy Yankee, we did some stuff Ricky Martin, I know Will.i.am also did some stuff with Joan Sebastian before he passed away.

So latino music has always been part of BEP frequency so I am glad that we can tap into that.

Are you also going to combine multiple languages in your lyrics? 

Yes, we will have bilingual verses and chorus on this album, we have a lot of latino artists that are collaborating with us. You know, we have done this in the past, on previous records, so it’s good to be able to bring full circle. And this album will be dedicated to the frequency that represents the latino community around the world. It’s an international sound and we are very proud to tap into it and just add on into the culture.

There are many influences that have affected the three components of the group since their childhood. Will.i.am, Taboo and Apl.de.Ap are in themselves a big mixture of cultures and interests. Black Eyed Peas can be considered as one of the pioneer groups in the music experimentation and style fusion. Over the years they have created a unique sound that will distinguish them forever.

The energy is a key element that is present in all your music compositions, even your ballads have the power to make people dance, is the new album going to follow this direction?

Yes, this new album, this new project, as we like to call it, will be for the world to dance to, to work out to, to drive to, to be inspired by, to make love to, to be happy and exited and enjoy life to. It kind of resembles ‘The Energy Never Dies’ which is our album ‘The E.N.D’ and ‘The Beginning’ mixed with ‘Elephunk’ because we had a lot of latin influences on that. We are very excited because we are tapping into that international frequency… that ‘feel good music’ that people are used to from Black Eyed Peas.

Your music has always had something to say about how the world could be a better place and how the humanity has the power to change things for the better, which song would you recommend for people to listen to during this global health crisis we are living these days?

Being that we are going through some tough times right now, being quarantined. I would say ‘feel good music’. You know, from Black Eyed Peas, to Bob Marley, to Bill Withers, to Stevie Wonder, to Prince. I would say just to keep your spirits up. A Tribe Called Quest is music that makes me balance and makes me feel good. Just music that elevates your soul and your spirit.
